Connecting the Dots to Brighter Futures: Alexis’s Journey

If you’ve followed NBCF’s stories for a while, you’ve likely heard of our student, Alexis. From news interviews to coffee shop commercials, Alexis is no stranger to the public eye. We’ve shared his story before, but this Giving Tuesday, we’re “connecting the dots” to show just how impactful donors like you are to a student’s growth. Each person, each supporter, and each resource is a dot that leads a child like Alexis toward independence, confidence, and success. Read on to see how these dots come together.

Dot One: Alexis – Finding His Voice

The first dot is Alexis himself. When he joined NBCF around age 4, Alexis was quiet and hesitant, still finding his place in the world.

Image shows Alexis laughing while standing next to his smiling best friend, Amir, while they stand in the sunny courtyard of NBCF. Both boys wear red NBCF shirts.

He didn’t start speaking openly until the 3rd to 4th grade, but since then, he’s grown into a confident, talkative young person. Today, Alexis never stops talking—especially when he’s with his best friend, Amir, whom he met through NBCF programs. Alexis’s journey is marked by resilience, but it’s also shaped by a network of support that’s helped him reach new milestones.

Dot Two: Ms. Megan – The Advocate Who Listens

The second dot is Ms. Megan, NBCF’s devoted family advocate, who made it her mission to ensure Alexis had the support he needed to thrive.

Ms. Megan worked closely with Alexis’s family, attending school meetings and advocating for an education plan that recognized his potential. She played a key role in getting him access to learning environments that would allow him to flourish. Thanks to her commitment, Alexis gained the confidence to excel academically, move up to grade-level classes, and embrace his identity with pride.

Dot Three: Janet Julian – Supporting Life Skills and Learning

The third dot in Alexis’s story is Janet Julian, one of NBCF’s consistent and cherished supporters since 2020. This past July, Janet contributed $1,500, bringing her total donations to over $8,300. Because Janet’s gifts have come as unrestricted funds, NBCF has been able to allocate them to essential programs, including our life skills classes and educational support for students like Alexis.

These programs have given Alexis the chance to practice real-world skills, from everyday tasks to more complex problem-solving, preparing him for a confident and independent future. Janet’s ongoing generosity provides NBCF with the flexibility to meet the needs of our students and to give them the tools and encouragement they need to thrive.

The Connection: How Dots Make a Difference

These dots are more than individual contributions; together, they form a powerful network of support that helps children like Alexis reach their full potential.

Each dot—whether it’s Alexis’s determination, Ms. Megan’s advocacy, or Janet’s generosity—plays a unique role in empowering him to succeed. Alexis’s growth is a true example of how, when people come together, they can create life-changing pathways. Each connection strengthens the next, building a foundation for confidence, resilience, and independence that extends far beyond the classroom.

Be the Next Dot in a Child’s Journey

This Giving Tuesday, you have the chance to be the next dot in a child’s life. It doesn’t take a large foundation or significant grant to make a lasting impact—just someone like you. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us secure resources, provide personalized support, and build life skills that transform lives. You too can be like Janet in helping a student reach their full potential, empowering children like Alexis to grow with confidence and independence. Join us in connecting the next dot, and together, let’s build brighter futures, one step at a time.
