Connecting the Dots to Discovery: Chevelle’s Journey

At Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation, every child’s journey is unique, marked by incredible growth, resilience, and discovery. This Giving Tuesday, we’re highlighting how each person, each resource, and each moment of support comes together to transform a child’s life. Chevelle’s story shows how connecting these “dots” can help a young child grow into their full potential, and we invite you to be part of her journey.

Dot One: Chevelle – Finding Her Way

Chevelle joined NBCF at just 2 years old, unable to talk or walk. Born with low vision, Chevelle lost most of her sight early on, with little chance of it returning. She had been living in a medical facility since she was just 7 months old and was often described as mellow or sad.

Yet in just a year at NBCF, Chevelle has made incredible strides. Today, she’s not only communicating with her teachers but also walking, exploring her surroundings, and filling rooms with joy. Chevelle’s journey is a testament to her resilience and curiosity as she discovers the world in new ways.

Dot Two: Ms. Yonni – The Teacher Who Learns Alongside Her Student

The second dot in Chevelle’s story is Ms. Yonni, a dedicated teacher who works closely with her. Before meeting Chevelle, Ms. Yonni had limited experience with children who are visually impaired.

Image shows Chevelle on Ms. Yonni's lap, the two of them smiling as they play a hand clapping game.

But through her time with Chevelle, she has learned to grow in compassion, openness, and skill in working with children with visual impairments. Ms. Yonni’s journey of learning to see the world through Chevelle’s eyes has been transformative, deepening her empathy and her ability to make learning accessible, joyful, and inspiring for all her students.

Dot Three: The Windsong Trust – Supporting Discovery with Essential Learning Tools

The third dot in Chevelle’s story is the Windsong Trust, which provided a transformative grant awarded on December 23rd with a budget of $150,000 to support NBCF’s Children’s Learning Center classes, including Dots & Tots and our after-school program. This grant funded vital tools, such as the water table and other tactile toys in the Dots & Tots classroom, that allow Chevelle to explore and learn through sensory experiences.

These resources have become integral to Chevelle’s daily learning, offering her new ways to experience textures, sounds, and temperatures—all crucial for building confidence and curiosity. With the Windsong Trust’s support, NBCF can continue to provide essential learning tools that help Chevelle and other children expand their understanding of the world around them.

The Connection: How Every Dot Helps a Child Blossom

Each of these dots—Chevelle’s resilience, Ms. Yonni’s dedication, and the impactful support from the Windsong Trust—comes together to create a powerful network of support that helps Chevelle reach her full potential.

Image shows three red dots with the names, 'Chevelle,' 'Ms. Yonni,' and 'Windsong Trust,' on them in white letters. Dotted lines connect the three dots into the shape of a heart.

Every dot strengthens the next, creating an environment where Chevelle can continue to learn, grow, and explore with confidence. Together, they make it possible for children like Chevelle to experience the world, develop essential skills, and blossom with each new step.

Be the Next Dot in a Child’s Journey

This Giving Tuesday, you have the chance to connect the next dot in a child’s life. It doesn’t take a large grant or foundation to make a difference—it just takes you. Every gift, big or small, helps us provide the resources, tools, and support that empower children like Chevelle to thrive. You don’t have to be a big donor to make a lasting impact; anyone can be a dot that connects a child to a brighter future. Join us in building more stories of growth, resilience, and discovery—one dot, one child, one life-changing moment at a time.
