The Heart Behind NBCF: Remembering Conner Spilsbury

The Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation family is heartbroken by the passing of our inspiration, our guiding light, and the reason NBCF exists — Conner Spilsbury.

In April 2004, Kevin and Toni Spilsbury welcomed twins, Conner and Cassidy, into the world. Conner was born blind and faced severe health complications from the very beginning of his life. After leaving the NICU, the Spilsbury family quickly discovered how few resources existed in Nevada for blind and visually impaired children and their families. Faced with uncertainty and a lack of support, they chose not to leave their home state behind. Instead, they chose to create change.

Driven by their love for Conner and their determination to ensure no other family felt alone, Kevin and Toni opened the doors of Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation just two years later. What began as Nevada’s first Braille and resource library grew into a life-changing organization providing programming, education, advocacy, and hope to hundreds of children and families across our community.

Conner’s life became the catalyst for a mission far greater than anyone could have imagined. Through NBCF, children who once faced barriers discovered confidence, independence, friendship, and opportunity. Families found support systems, resources, and a community that understood their journey. His impact lives on in every child who learns Braille, every student who gains independence, and every family who realizes they are not alone.

To honor his incredible legacy, NBCF established the Conner Spilsbury Empowerment Award, presented to a current or former NBCF student who demonstrates exemplary leadership within our organization and community. The award serves as a lasting reminder of Conner’s spirit and the extraordinary difference one life can make.

While Conner’s passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy will continue to shape the future of NBCF and the children we serve for generations to come.

A private memorial service will be held for the family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation to continue the mission Conner inspired and made possible. With continued support, Conner’s light will continue to shine brightly in the lives of countless children and families throughout Nevada.
