Visually Impaired Students Cooked a Thanksgiving Meal for Their Families At Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation
Las Vegas, NV (Nov. 21, 2022) – Students from Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation (NBCF) got into the season of giving by cooking up a delicious holiday meal for their families. This was a two-day event as part of NBCF’s After School Program for cooking, where students learn how to operate kitchen appliances, follow a recipe, and create tasty meals.
On Friday night, Nov. 18, students with visual impairment and blindness utilized skills learned in class to prepare the meal and enjoyed a sleepover where they also played games, watched a movie, and made fall crafts including a wreath and centerpieces. The kids then celebrated the season, and their cooking accomplishments, with friends and family during a special Thanksgiving lunch the following day, featuring the food and centerpieces made from the night before.
In addition to the tasty meal, each family received a take-home meal kit featuring items they’ll need to make their own Thanksgiving feast including a whole turkey and a fresh-made apple pie prepared by their student.
When done, the kids prepared: 16 apple pies, two 20 lb. turkeys, one 10 lb. ham, four trays of stuffing, four salads, two trays of mac and cheese, two apple cider cakes, two green bean casseroles, two sweet potato casseroles, two trays of mashed potatoes, and two corn casseroles.
“Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation aims to teach blind and visually impaired students essential life skills such as cooking,” said Maribel Garcia, executive director. “We’re very proud of the progress they’ve made in the kitchen this year and what better way to showcase their skills than by having them prepare a warm meal for their friends and families.”
